Professional Biography

Mike is an Orthopaedic Consultant at Wrightington Hospital where his clinical practice is exclusively in surgery of the hand and wrist. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Universities of Liverpool and Salford and is the Medical Director at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance.

His interest in sports medicine came as a medical student with a visit to Graham Smith at the national sports centre at Lilleshall. This inspired a dissertation examining blood lactic acid in athletes for his intercalated physiology degree.

Over the last fifteen years he has developed a special interest in sports injuries of the hand and wrist and is the hand surgeon to many professional sports teams and national sporting bodies.
Mike regularly lectures both at home in the UK and internationally, particularly in North America. His research is regularly published in European and American Literature.
He has been an examiner for the Intercollegiate Board of the Royal College of Surgeons and also for the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine.

Outside of medicine Mike played rugby union and captained the English Universities team in a Grand Slam season. A serious neck injury prevented further participation and he now enjoys golf and cycling.
