“It’s great to be able to have my Marathon Medical done in one place, in less than two hours! The expertise and facilities at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP) are fantastic, and it’s an extremely professional, streamlined process.”
Elliot Smales, 24, is a Professional Triathlete from Leeds. He has an impressive record, winning three of the four IRONMAN 70.3 races on the UK and Ireland Tour in 2018, in just his second season at the distance.
Triathlon is a recent addition for Elliot. He started out club swimming at school and didn’t participate in a lot of running, as he didn’t enjoy it. However, he joined the triathlon club at University in 2013, where he began to like running more. Over the years, he has consistently progressed with his running, so that it is now a strength.
Elliot visited The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP) for his Marathon Medical. In order to compete in certain European marathons; France, Italy and Spain, you have to have a valid medical certificate. This has to be renewed on an annual basis. Currently, MIHP is one of the only facilities in the North that offers this service.

“The expertise and facilities at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP) are fantastic, and it’s an extremely professional, streamlined process. They really do have everything under-one-roof; medical and also performance and recovery services like the Environmental Chamber, which I will be looking to use in the future.”
Training for and running a marathon has multiple health benefits, however it can also stress your body’s physiological reserves close to their limits.
As a result there can be an increased risk of injury, illness and occasionally even heart problems. Some countries, including France, Spain and Italy, mandate medical screening before being allowed to enter these events.
At The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance (MIHP), we have world-class diagnostic facilities along with experienced Sports Medicine and Performance Science staff who can perform all the necessary screening.
We can help to identify, advise and act on any medical risks and in doing so, prevent a problem before it occurs.
The assessment will consist of:
• Full Doctors Medical Exam and sign off
• Complete Urine Test
• ECG at Rest
• Exercise stress test
The cost for the medical is £475. To book or for more information, please call 0161 641 8300 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
