Mrs Haines jointly runs the Elite Breathlessness Clinic at The Manchester Institute of Health & Performance.
Jemma’s NHS practice is based at the North West Lung Centre, University of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. She is the lead for the multidisciplinary tertiary airways service which treats patients with a variety of conditions including; upper airway dysfunction, chronic cough and difficult to control asthma. She co-ordinates the service’s respiratory nasendoscopy lists to aid differential diagnosis. Her patient cohort portfolio includes severe asthmatics, complex breathlessness, large airways collapse, chronic cough and elite athletes. She is the allied health professional upper airways lead for the North West Severe Asthma Network and North West Cough Network.
Previously she conceptualised, co-founded and managed Airways Clinic Services at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (2005-2016). With Dr Aashish Vyas, Jemma grew the multidisciplinary team, which now attracts national referrals and is a leading centre for complex breathlessness management.
Jemma chaired the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist’s position paper, ‘Speech and language therapy in adult respiratory care (2015) and was appointed a RCSLT professional respiratory advisor in 2015. She was elected onto the RCSLT Professional Practice and Policy Committee (2015-2018), representing the membership and supporting the RCSLT board of trustees on professional issues. Jemma is an invited author for the British Thoracic Society Clinical Statement guidelines on ‘Complex Breathlessness Management’ (2016-17).

- Research: Jemma is very committed to clinical research; her team are developing a research portfolio which includes identifying the optimal diagnostic pathway for patients with vocal cord dysfunction, refinement of a diagnostic questionnaire for vocal cord dysfunction and assessing non-pharmacological intervention for chronic cough management. She has attended numerous national and international conferences presenting her work.
