Mr Barkatali is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee and hip surgery, sports injuries and trauma related pathology of the knee as well surgery for degenerative pathology.
He studied medicine at The University of Edinburgh from which he graduated in 2004. After completing his house officer year, Bilal spent time at the University of Oxford undertaking a prosectorship, teaching anatomy, which developed his grounding and a passion for surgery. Following his basic surgical training, he gained entry into higher specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery across the region.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and has completed a Fellowship in knee surgery, becoming a specialist in this field. He completed his training in July 2014, and secured a position as a consultant at Salford Royal NHS Teaching Foundation Trust.
Bilal has published numerous peer reviewed research articles and continues his interest in research. This includes current collaborations with the University of Manchester and Salford University looking into stem cell research and biomaterials. It was as a medical student that Bilal’s passion for Orthopaedic surgery was ignited after injuring his knee in a football match. He required an ACL reconstruction to get him back to sport, and ever since he has understood the importance of getting people back to full activity; whether as a high level athlete or just to keep fit.
