John’s interest in Sport and Exercise Medicine developed during his own athletics career when he competed as a middle distance runner for Sale Harriers Manchester and N Ireland. He initially trained as a GP in Manchester before entering higher specialist training as a registrar in Sport and Exercise Medicine in the London Deanery where he worked at the Olympic Medical Institute, Chelsea FC academy and then with the Orthopaedic team at Charing Cross Hospital. He completed his Sports Medicine training in the Yorkshire Deanery at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals in Sheffield. His first consultant post was at the tertiary referral Defence Military Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Surrey.
From 2008 to 2013 he worked as Endurance and then Institute Medical Officer to British Athletics at their National Performance Institute in Loughborough, UK. He worked closely with Team GB’s leading endurance athletes in the 3 years preceding the London Olympics at altitude training camps in Font Romeu, France and Iten, Kenya and worked extensively with GB and N Ireland teams at World and European Cross Country Championships from 2007 to 2013. He worked trackside at the London Olympic Games in 2012, was Team Doctor to the British Paralympic Athletics Team for the IPC world championships in France in 2013 and was Chief Medical Officer to Team GB for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China 2014. He currently works as clinical lead for the south Manchester NHS Musculoskeletal service at UHSM and as Lead Sports Physician to ORRECO. His clinical interests include overuse tendon and bone injuries, underperformance in sport, bioanalytics, sports cardiology and sports related concussion.
