Professional biography

Professor Aali Sheen went to medical school in Scotland, which was followed by specialist training in General Surgery in London, Leeds and Manchester in the UK as well as Sweden for specialist ‘keyhole’ hernia surgery.

Professor Sheen redefined the sportsman’s groin and published the first consensus statement for groin pain in athletes in 2014. He has been an invited speaker to many international conferences as well as being recognised as a national leader in the management of patients/athletes with groin pain. Professor Sheen is well published in the field of groin disruption and recently was the lead investigator in the UK on the world’s first randomised controlled trial for the surgical treatment of the sportsman’s groin, which compared open to keyhole surgery, both techniques with which he undertakes to a high level.

He has vast experience in the care of both elite and amateur athletes for groin injuries and has operated on many premiership football players. He is always considerate to the needs of the athlete but most importantly knows when not to operate on an individual as physiotherapy and other treatments such as Plasma injections and/or Shockwave Therapy are indicated instead.

Professor Sheen is also a core member of Manchester’s Hip and Groin Clinic at MIHP but also sees patients outside of this group.
